It’s bad policy to deceive parents, says legal group (Steve McConkey quote)

ONE NEWS NOW – A conservative law group is seeking to challenge a Wisconsin school district’s gender identity policy that would prevent parents from knowing if their child is transitioning.

Last year, the Madison School District began using a “guidance document” for teachers that prohibits them from informing parents if their child is a transgender without the student’s permission. The document states that school staff “shall not disclose any information that may reveal a student’s gender identity to others, including parents or guardians and other school staff, unless legally required to do so or unless the student has authorized such disclosure.”

The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL), based in Milwaukee, is seeking to have the district repeal the policy before considering any litigation to stop it.

“Our problem is with the systematic exclusion of families, even to the point of instructing district employees to actively deceive families,” Rick Esenberg, president and general counsel for WILL, told the Wisconsin State Journal. “[The policy] presumes that the families are going to do something that will harm the children, and it’s hard to think of a single example, other than this, where we do that.”

His advice? “Here in this town, I would not have my kids in a public school at all. It’s social engineering to the max,” he states.

A 2018 Dane County youth survey estimates about four percent of Madison students identified as transgender, “non-binary,” or “gender-expansive.” According to the State Journal report, the person who oversees the school district’s LGBT efforts predicts the number is higher, given that the figure reflects the students willing to provide the information about their gender identity.
