Born in Des Moines, Iowa. This was at Dunlap Elementary. Steve is near the wall. This picture was in the Des Moines Register in November 1961 around Thanksgiving.


While going to Dunlap Elementary in Des Moines, Iowa, Steve went to the Drake Relays on field trips in 1967 and 1968. Here is Olympic runner Jim Ryun.

1973 Upper St. Croix Valley All-Conference Cross Country team. Steve moved to the Danbury, Wisconsin area in 1968 after the sixth grade and ran at Webster High School. Steve was third in the conference, one of the top conferences at that time.


Steve ran at the University of Wisconsin-Superior before transferring to Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Steve ran three marathons and has ran over 66,700 miles since 1971.

One of the reasons Steve decided to go to Western Kentucky University for his masters degree was because of British Olympians Nick Rose and Tony Staynings. Rose won the 1974 NCAA Cross Country Championships title. At the 1973 NCAA Championships, he lost to Steve Prefontaine.


1980 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country champions with a perfect 15 points. Went on to place sixth at the NCAA Divison 1 Championships. The indoor track and field team was first in the OVC and third outdoors. While getting a Master of Science-Public Health degree at Western Kentucky, Steve was a grad assistant coach.


Running greats while at Western Kentucky University. Canadian Ron Becht, British Olympian Tony Staynings, Larry Cuzzort, Greg Orman, and South African Ashley Johnson. Too many NCAA titles and other top achievements to list.

 
1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Steve and Liz started in world-class track and field ministries in 1981. From 1982 through 1992, Steve was a USA National Club Coach for Athletes in Action (Eugene), Lay Witnesses for Christ (Dallas-Ft. Worth), and 4 Winds USA (Minneapolis-St. Paul). Athletes were ranked eighty times. In 1992, 4 Winds USA dropped the team and started working with all world-class track and field athletes. In 2014, 4 Winds USA started standing up for Christian athletes in every sport.

These small flags were handed out during the 1984 Olympic women’s marathon. Steve and Liz saw Joan Benoit win the first gold medal in the new event.

Great Olympic Trials and Championships were held in Indianapolis for many years.


Gordon Laine competed for 4 Winds USA. He was fourth in the long jump at the 1988 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.

Steve and Liz were 100 yards from where the bomb went off at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. They saw a guy going in with an Army bag before the bomb went off. The FBI interviewed them.


One of the nails from the bomb hit a statue. Two people died. Many were able to move away from the suspicious Army bag before it went off.

Steve and Liz’s three kids played on top ten high school basketball teams in Wisconsin. Two went on to compete at universities.


Steve has ran over 66,700 miles since 1971. Here is a picture by the Memorial Union on the University of Wisconsin campus.


Steve and Liz live close to the University of Wisconsin football stadium in Madison. Jesse Owens competed in a track and field meet at the stadium when the track was there. Shortly after, he won four golds at the 1936 Olympics defying Hitler.

Steve and Liz were married in 1980. They have three children, eight grandchildren. Liz helped co-found 4 Winds USA in 1988.
