Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. - Psalm 146:3

God laughs at a rebellious world

By Merrill Olson

The Psalmist said, “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure” (Psalm 2:4-5).

When we see lawsuits against Christian settings, politicians defying biblical truth, gender confusion, legalized sexual perversion, unborn children put to death, illegal drug consumption, political lying, high divorce rate, internet porn sites, blasphemous television programs and movies, billions of dollars spent on gambling, and the list goes on, we understand a world steeped in rebellion against anything godly. Hopefully some of this will change with the new administration. But Psalm 2 speaks strongly against a rebellious world!

Bible prophecy is one hundred percent accurate. It has never been wrong, and it will hold one hundred percent true in its prophetic predictions. Therefore, a time is coming when the LORD “shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure” (v. 5). It will be a time when God “laughs” (v. 4) at their insolence. He will mock their defiance. Their threats and boasts against Him and anything godly will be like the squeaks of a mouse against a lion! Eventually, God will break His silence and will speak in His wrath. This holy and divine anger and fury will be such that His enemies will be terrified.

When will this take place? It will happen when they hear His irrevocable decision: “I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion” (Ps. 2:6). Who is this King? It is the Lord Jesus Christ as He comes in His Second Coming as Judge and to set up His thousand-year reign (Rev. 19:11-20:4). He will dwell in Jerusalem; and because He will rule in truth, “Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth” (Zech. 8:3). It will not be controlled by Muslims or anyone else. Instead, the nations will call that city, “The City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 60:14).

King Jesus will be characterized by a love of righteousness and a hatred for lawlessness (Heb. 1:8-9). There will not be a frustrated United Nations trying to solve the conflicts between nations. There will be no United Nations. Instead, the “King of kings” (Rev. 19:16) will rule the nations with a “rod of iron” (v. 15). He will reign with complete power and authority and no one will dare to defy Him.

In a world becoming more and more steeped in violence, sin, and defiance against God, it is merely pointing to the time when God says, “Enough!” No person, including the President of the United States and those in foreign countries will have the final say. God will say, “Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little” (Ps. 2:12). “Kiss” means “worship” “allegiance” “adoration.” When King Jesus reigns on this earth, He will restore things the way God intends them to be. The verse concludes, “Blessed are those who put their trust in Him.” This brings safety and happiness, including that which is eternal.
